Mendel - Furglau

What a view!
Duration: 6 hours
To get to our starting point at Mendel, you can either take a taxi or go by bus and funicular railway. The Mendel funicular railway is the longest and steepest in Europe and was built in 1903-1904. It takes just 12 minutes to cover a difference in height of 850 m with a gradient of 64%. To reach the funicular, just take the bus to Kaltern and then on to St Anton where you can get out at the funicular station.
Having reached Mendel, path 512 starts opposite the Kalterer Hof, and after one and a half hours, we are on the Penegal (1740 above sea level). What a view! Carry on along path 512 in a northerly direction to Furglau and down through the Furglau Gorge on path 540.
The descent to the hotel Steinegger takes approximately 2 hours. The way back is either on path ST past the Gleif Church or on path 7 and 540 past Englar Castle.
