Castle Matschatsch

Castle Matschatsch you pass by this building when driving up to the Mendel
On your right is a car park, and from here you can walk to the idyllically situated castle. History: in the 16th century it belonged to a certain Matheis Pernstich who most probably sold it to the von Fuchs family. In the 18th century it belonged to the Franzin family, and in 1806 the Schasser family from Kaltern, who made it into their summer residence. De Pauli bought the residence in 1887 and renovated it to use as his summer residence. In 1953 the village of Eppan bought the villa and extended it. Architectural style: although a relatively modern building for its time, Schloss Matschatsch has many examples of the Überetsch architectural style. On the south side there is a small, half round chapel with a dome and lantern. The castle looks very romantic situated in the middle of the trees. Walking: those who want to walk up the Mendel or just to the castle, are in for a stiff walk. You can, of course, drive to the car park and just walk the short distance. There are plenty of benches to sit down on in front of the castle, as well as lots to discover.
