Burg Festenstein

Burg Festenstein: at the edge of the Eppan district, just below Gaid and in a gorge, is Burg Festenstein.
History: the first owners, the date of building and the builders are not known. It was first mentioned in 1220, and in 1500 it was burnt down, but rebuilt at a later date. Franz Lanser took over the castle in the middle of the 17th century and it was kept in the family for many years. In 1910 a German businessman bought the ruin and restored it. Architectural style: the situation of the castle is very impressive, on the top of a steep porphyrite rock formation in the Gaider gorge. The towers make it particularly visible. . The back of the castle is rock. The farm and outbuilding have stone framed arched doors and there was a drawbridge. The entrance is well protected, the drawbridge up. The last renovation gave the tower a square roof. Walking: you can reach Festenstein from Andrian, Perdonig and Gaid, or by walking uphill from Schloss Korb or Boymont.
