While you are spending your holiday in Eppan, a trip to a winery with wine tasting is something that shouldn’t be missed. It is the best way to find out all about wine and to taste the various varieties. Ask at the local wineries, most of them offer tours and tastings for free
South Tyrolean White Burgundy:
439 hectares – the White Burgundy grape (Pinot Blanc) originally comes from France and has been planted in South Tyrol for approximately 100 years. Usually grown on pergolas or wire frames. Growth regulations: maximum yield 130 dz per hectare. Minimum alcohol content: 11% volume. Character: fresh, fruity white wine. Colour: from greeny to light yellow. Bouquet: light apple smell. Taste: dry, fresh, racy acidity. Storage: can be kept for 1-2 years. Serving temperature: 8-10 degrees. A good wine to drink with light starters, fish, or as an aperitif.
South Tyrolean Chardonnay:
393 hectares – the Chardonnay grape originally comes from France and has been planted in South Tyrol for approximately 100 years. Usually grown on pergolas or wire frames. Growth regulations: maximum yield 130 dz per hectare. Minimum alcohol content: 11% volume. Character: fresh, fruity white wine. Colour: greeny yellow. Bouquet: delicate and fruity. Taste: dry, fresh, lively. Storage: can be kept for 1-2 years. Serving temperature: 8-10 degrees. A good wine to drink with light starters, fish, or as an aperitif.
South Tyrolean Terlaner:
South Tyrolean Terlaner from the Niedermayr winery. Grapes: about 80% White Burgundy and 20% Chardonnay. Acidity: 5.8 %. Sugar free extract: 25 g per litre. Residue sugar: 2 g per litre. 13% alcohol. Colour: greeny to light yellow. Bouquet: fruity with a slight apple smell. Taste: fresh and lively. Storage: 3-5 years. Serving temperature: 8-10 degrees. A good wine to drink with light starters, fish, asparagus and as an aperitif.
South Tyrolean Riesling:
43 hectares – the Riesling grape originally comes from Germany and has been planted in South Tyrol for approximately 100 years. Always grown on pergolas or wire frames. Growth regulations: maximum yield 130 dz per hectare. Minimum alcohol content: 11% volume. Character: elegant with a flowery bouquet. Colour: greeny to light yellow. Bouquet: light flowery, lightly ethereal. Taste: dry, fresh, slightly acidity, lively, elegant. Storage: 1-2 years. Serving temperature: 8-10 degrees. A good wine to drink with brain soup, prawn cocktail, seafood, boiled lobster and as an aperitif.
South Tyrolean Gewürztraminer:
142 hectares – the Gewürztraminer vine gets its name from the South Tyrolean wine village of Tramin and is now planted all over the world. Grown on pergolas or wire frames. Growth regulations: maximum yield 120 dz per hectare. Minimum alcohol content: 11.5% volume. Character: full bodied, full aroma white wine. Colour: light hay colour to golden yellow. Bouquet: light to distinctive, aromatic, typical. Taste: dry, full-bodied, pleasantly tasty. Storage: 1-2 years. Serving temperature: 10-12 degrees. A good wine to drink with prawns, lobster, pate and as an aperitif or desert wine.
South Tyrolean Pinot Gris:
249 hectares – originates from Burgundy and has been grown in South Tyrol for approximately 100 years. Grown on pergolas or wire frames. Growth regulations: maximum yield 130 dz per hectare. Minimum alcohol content: 11.5% volume. Character: full bodied white wine. Colour: straw yellow. Bouquet: pleasant, discreet. Taste: dry, full-bodied, soft, and pleasant. Storage: 1-2 years. Serving temperature: 8-10 degrees. A good wine to drink with mushroom dishes, fresh water fish, cooked seafood, and fish soup.
South Tyrolean Sylvaner:
8 hectares – the Sylvaner grapes are grown on pergolas. Growth regulations: maximum yield 130 dz per hectare. Minimum alcohol content: 11% volume. Character: pleasant, fresh white wine. Colour: light yellow to green. Bouquet: pleasant, fruity. Taste: dry, fresh and fruity. Storage: 1-2 years. Serving temperature: 8-10 degrees. A good wine to drink with asparagus, wine soup, fish, (boiled or grilled) and as an aperitif.
South Tyrolean Sauvignon:

Bouquet: slightly like stinging nettles, cassis. Taste: dry, light, aromatic with a pleasant acidity. Storage: 1-2 years. Serving temperature: 8-10 degrees. A good wine to drink with asparagus, onion soup, fish (fried or grilled), snails or as an aperitif.
South Tyrolean Merlot Rose:
78 hectares including Merlot – the Merlot vine comes originally from France and has been planted in South Tyrol for approximately 100 years. Grown on pergolas. Growth regulations: maximum yield 130 dz per hectare. Minimum 11% volume. Colour: garnet to dark garnet. Bouquet: pleasant, slightly like currants. Taste: full bodied, slightly dry. Storage: 4-5 years, good years can also be kept longer, after being stored in wooden barrels for 2 years the wine can be labelled “Riserva”. Serving temperature: 16-18 degrees. A good wine to drink with roast rabbit, venison, poultry and spicy cheese.
South Tyrolean Vernatsch:
787 hectares – large or noble Vernatsch. Grown on pergolas. Growth regulations: maximum yield 140 dz per hectare. Minimum alcohol content: 10.5% volume. Character: a light, easily digestible red wine. Colour: light ruby to ruby red. Bouquet: pleasant, fruity. Taste: dry, mild, slightly like almonds. Storage: 1-2 years. Serving temperature: 13-15 degrees. A good wine to drink with starters, Speck, sausages, boiled meat, white meat (grilled or roasted) and mild cheese.
Kalterersee Auslese:
1,001 hectares – Vernatsch and varieties, but mainly the large or noble Vernatsch. Blauburgunder and Lagrein are allowed to make not more than 15% of the vineyard. Grown on pergolas. Growth regulations: maximum yield 140 dz per hectare. Minimum alcohol content: 11.5% volume. Character: a light, mild, low in tannin red wine. Colour: light ruby to ruby red. Bouquet: pleasant and fruity. Taste: dry, mild, harmonious, slightly like bitter almonds. Storage: 1-2 years. Serving temperature: 13-15 degrees. A good wine to drink with starters, Speck, sausages, boiled meat, white meat (grilled or fried), mild cheese.
St Magdalena:
308 hectares – Vernatsch and varieties, but mainly the large or noble Vernatsch. Blauburgunder and Lagrein are allowed to make not more than 10% of the vineyard. Grown on pergolas. Growth regulations: maximum yield 125 dz per hectare. Minimum alcohol content: 11.5%. Character: the strongest of the Vernatsch wines. Colour: ruby to garnet red. Bouquet: flowery, slightly like violets. Taste: dry, full bodied, spicy, slight taste of almonds.
South Tyrolean Lagrein:
Showpiece of the Niedermayr Winery – 256 hectares. Lagrein is a local vine. Grown on pergolas. Growth regulations: maximum yield 140 dz per hectare. Character: a) Lagrein Kretzer or Rose - Colour: pink to light ruby red. Bouquet: delicate. Taste: dry, fresh, stimulating Minimum alcohol content: 11% volume. Storage: 1-2 years. Serving temperature 10-12 degrees. A good wine for hearty starters, smoked fish and white meat. b) Lagrein Dunkel – Colour: ruby to dark garnet red. Bouquet: pleasant, slightly like violets. Taste: dry, full-bodied, smooth. Minimum alcohol content: 11.5% volume. Storage: 4-6 years, good years can also be kept longer, after being stored in wooden barrels for 2 years the wine can be labelled “Riserva”. Serving temperature: 16-18 degrees. A good wine to drink with venison, poultry, dark meat and hard cheese.
Euforius:
a wine from the Niedermayr Winery. A blend of various South Tyrolean grapes. Acidity: 4.75. Sugar free extract: 25.8 g per litre. Residue sugar: less than 2 g per litre. 12.5% alcohol. Colour: dark ruby red. Bouquet: strong aroma of forest berries, morello cherries and fresh grass. Taste: full bodied and smooth. Storage: 4-6 years. Serving temperature: 18-20 degrees. A good wine to drink with venison and all hearty meat dishes and cheese desserts. It is better to decant this wine before serving.
South Tyrolean Blauburgunder:
252 hectares – Blauburgunder or Pinot Noir vines originate from Burgundy and have been planted in South Tyrol for approximately 100 years. Grown on pergolas or wire frames. Growth regulations: maximum yield 120 dz per hectare. Minimum alcohol content: 11.5% volume. Colour: ruby red with brick red reflexes after long storage. Bouquet: ethereal, pleasant. Taste: dry, full bodied with a pleasant acidity. Storage: 4-6 years, good years can also be kept longer, after being stored in wooden barrels for 2 years the wine can be labelled “Riserva”. Serving temperature: 16-18 degrees. A good wine to drink with red meat (grilled or roasted), venison and spicy hard cheeses.
South Tyrolean Merlot:
78 hectares. Merlot vines originate from France and have been planted in South Tyrol for approximately 100 years. Grown on pergolas. Growth regulations: maximum yield 130 dz per hectare. Minimum alcohol content: 11% volume. Colour: garnet red to dark garnet red. Bouquet: pleasant, slightly like currants. Taste: full bodied, slightly dry. Storage: 4-6 years, good years can also be kept longer, after being stored in wooden barrels for 2 years the wine can be labelled “Riserva”. Serving temperature: 16-18 degrees. A good wine to drink with roast rabbit, venison, poultry, and spicy cheese.
South Tyrolean Cabernet:
103 hectares – Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc both originate from France and have been planted in South Tyrol for approximately 100 years. Grown on pergolas or wire frames. Growth regulations: maximum yield 110 dz per hectare. Minimum alcohol content: 11.5% volume. Character: a strong red wine. Colour: garnet to dark garnet red. Bouquet: slightly like currants and wild wine. Taste: full bodied and strong. Storage: 4-5 years, good years can also be kept longer, after being stored in wooden barrels for 2 years the wine can be labelled “Riserva”. Serving temperature: 16-18 degrees. A good wine to drink with red meat (grilled or roasted), venison, poultry and spicy cheese.
South Tyrolean Rosenmuskateller:
9 hectares – grown mainly on pergolas. Growth regulations: maximum yield 60 dz per hectare. Minimum alcohol content: 12.5%. Character: aromatic red dessert wine with delicate flower. Colour: light ruby red. Taste: delicate, like roses. Taste: full bodied, spicy sweet. Storage: 3-4 years, good years can be kept longer. Serving temperature: 8-10 degrees. A good wine to drink with doughnuts and poppy strudel.
South Tyrolean Goldmuskateller:
29 hectares – grown on pergolas. Growth regulations: maximum yield: 100 dz per hectare. Minimum alcohol content: 11% volume. Character: aromatic wine. Colour: soft yellow to golden yellow. Bouquet: pleasantly like nutmeg. Taste: distinctively aromatic. Storage: 1-2 years. Serving temperature: 8-10 degrees. The dry variety is a good wine to drink with starters, and the sweet variety with desserts and cakes.
South Tyrolean Sparkling Wine:
a) showing the name of the grape and made from one variety only - b) without name (mixture). Growth regulations: Minimum alcohol content: 11.5% volume. Character: sparkling, fine grain. Colour: straw yellow with green reflexes. Bouquet: delicate, slightly like yeast. Taste: a) Extra Brut – dry b) Brut – light, mild. Storage: 2-3 years. Serving temperature: 6-8 degrees. Best drunk as an aperitif.
Wineries and Wine Bars:
The harvested grapes are pressed, fermented, stored, bottled and then sold by the many wineries, most of which are highly modern. In South Tyrol there are 17 winery cooperatives, 39 commercial wineries and many private wineries. A visit to a winery with wine tasting is an experience not to be missed. In South Tyrol there are both local and international cellar men and women who exhibit their wines at the yearly wine festival “Vinitaly” and win medals for the excellent quality.
