“Törggelen”: a traditional autumn custom.
After the wine pressing in autumn, all the helpers were invited to a hearty meal. A small festival where they could eat as much as they wanted and taste the new, sweet wine that hadn’t fermented. The typical foods were smoked meat and sausages, Kraut, dumplings or Speck, Kaminwurzen, cheese and homemade doughnuts. Roast chestnuts were eaten as a desert. The word “Törggelen” comes from the Latin “torquere” which means wine pressing and in South Tyrol the wine press is called a Torggl.
