140 years tourism

Eppan to fully dedicate itself to this special anniversary in 2012

The year 2012 sees Eppan on the South Tyrol Wine Route celebrating “140 years of Tourism in Eppan”. It was in fact 140 years ago, on 22 September 1872, that the government in Vienna (at that time the ruling authority in South Tyrol) approved the statutes submitted by the “Chur & Verschönerungsverein Eppan” (Eppan Spa & Beautification Association). At the same time Eppan received the designation of “Climatic Spa”. These two important events laid the foundations for the development of tourism: along with Gries and Meran, Eppan is today one of the oldest officially recognised tourism municipalities in South Tyrol.

As part of the anniversary celebrations for 2012, a number of highlights are being staged that relate to historical occurrences, allowing them to be experienced as actions and events. Preparations are proceeding apace, with the numerous anniversary happenings being organised in tandem with many traditional events such as the Wine Culture Weeks in St. Pauls-Eppan, the St. Pauls Festive Table, the Long Wednesdays in St. Michael-Eppan, the Montiggler Weis(s)e White Wine Festival, the Last Cartload of Grapes in Girlan-Eppan and many more.

The history of tourism in Eppan is particularly marked by the celebrities who have shaped the development of tourism here. Along with food and wine, plus the artistic, cultural, historical and architectural attractions of our community, these personalities form the backdrop to the anniversary celebrations.
