The wine region of Eppan

Wine from Eppan is the protagonist of the largest wine-growing region in South Tyrol. The high quality of the products is based not least on the privileged geographical location, because in Eppan sun-drenched vineyards and the Alps, which protect against harsh winds, shake hands: located directly on the Wine Road, only 10 km southwest of Bozen, Mediterranean hill country and the Mendel crest, which defies the cold currents, create the perfect conditions for a living winegrowing tradition with a southern joie de vivre. Red, but also above all white grape varieties grow here on 941 hectares of vineyards. They benefit from the mild alpine-continental climate, the cool fall winds and the variety of sites in the Überetsch and Unterland, which form the ideal breeding ground for high-quality grapes. The chalky, well-aerated gravel soils, which were created by the erosion of the glaciers and subsequent erosion, offer the best conditions for harvesting rich grapes. Eppan is not only the largest wine-growing community in South Tyrol, but also number one in terms of Pinot Blanc, which can develop its full potential here. A total of 20 different grape varieties are cultivated in Eppan: Chardonnay, Riesling, Sauvignon, Pinot Grigio, Gewürztraminer and Müller-Thurgau ripen on the fertile sites, as do the red wine varieties Pinot Noir, Cabernet, Merlot, Lagrein and various varieties of Vernatsch.

In the mirror of time: enjoyment based on experience

The wine region of Eppan looks back on a long history: wine was already being cultivated here over 2000 years ago. From the 8th century onwards, it was mainly Bavarian and Swabian monasteries that ran South Tyrolean vineyards. Winegrowing finally experienced a particular boom under the Habsburg Monarchy: Riesling and Burgundy varieties found a new home in the vineyards of Eppan. Until the 1970s, the Pinot Blanc grape - today the most widespread white grape variety in Eppan - was mainly used to produce simple drinking wines, which were mainly consumed in South Tyrol. In the 1980s, a development began that helped Pinot Blanc, as well as Eppan viticulture in general, to a sustained international flight of fancy that continues to this day: the development of wines by site, the drastic reduction of yields and the introduction of modern techniques and methods led the wines of Eppan to ascend to the wine Olympus - always according to the guiding principle of quality instead of quantity. Today, the wineries are characterised by innovation and a sense of tradition: Deeply rooted but multi-faceted, just like the landscape that surrounds them.
