Magic Worlds

THE 21ST EDITION OF CHRISTMAS NATIVITY IN SAN PAOLO ALLOWS US TO IMMERSE OURSELVES IN THE FASCINATION OF ADVENT AND TO REFLECT ON THE TRUE CHARACTER OF THIS CHRISTIAN FEAST.

In the village of San Paolo, part of the municipality of Appiano on the Strada del Vino, an Advent tradition was established that grows more popular every year. Visitors flock from far and wide to see the San Paolo Christmas nativity scenes and to experience the glowing Christmassy atmosphere, with its decorated village streets, the lights that sparkle and dance and of course to admire handicrafts, both ancient and modern. Especially after dusk, from 28th November 2020 to 6th January 2021, the picture-postcard village will be transformed into living nativity scenes.

After just a few minutes from Bolzano by bus or car, you are walking through the ornately decorated village centre and among some 100 nativity scenes of different styles, materials, dimensions and dates of origin. Among them, there are examples of Tyrolean wood sculpture and more. The nativity scenes in the village’s grottos, huts and barns, are adorned with figures, entire landscapes and atmospheric lighting. The creators come from the local nativity association, as well as from private collectors from all over South Tyrol. You’ll also see scenes exhibited in displays, windows, courtyards and elsewhere! Those who prefer the more genteel pace of village life to the city will find it a delight. Thomas Rauch, director of the Appiano Tourist Office, enthuses over the beginnings of this tradition and proudly explains how local retired businessman, Werner Schmid, set up the vast organizational machinery to run the event. Today there is an army of volunteers who take care of the construction and dismantling. The committee is led by Otto Kager, with the support of all the families of San Paolo, who make their windows, house facades and vaults available and who actively contribute to the staging of the Christmas Nativity.

On the Sundays of 13th and 20th December, the Nativity Association organises the highlight of Advent: a living nativity at the heart of the village, in front of the parish church. From 5 p.m. onwards, numerous lively angels first parade through the historic lanes of San Paolo. Following are Mary and Joseph with the baby Jesus, then the three wise men and the shepherds. There are even real sheep and goats who join this contemplative spectacle. Subject to change. Please check details before visiting.
