MEDITERRANEAN TO ALPINE HIKING PLEASURES
Be it a pleasurable hike through the landscape characterised by vineyards, a wonderful excursion to the Montiggl bathing lakes, a panoramic round tour to the Castle triangle of Eppan, or a demanding tour to the 1865 m high Gantkofel Mountain: pleasure seekers and the sporty, families and those looking for adventures, the romantic and those who love nature… all are simply amazed by the hiking Eldorado that is Eppan. About 450 km of well-marked hiking trails lead through the varied landscape of Eppan and past numerous interesting sights.
This is especially true for the classic amongst the hikes in Eppan, namely the Eppan Castle Hiking Trip. The start to this 3-hour round hike is in the idyllic harbour of Missian | Eppan. This tour is relatively easy. The experience it leaves is absolutely excellent. This well-structured trail with a number of interesting stairs ascent and descent link the following places: Castle Korb, Castle Boymont and Castle Hocheppan. Each of these castles has been witness to the lifestyle of the Middle Ages. Each of them offers great panoramic views, plus great dining within its wall.
The vineyards surrounding Eppan provide the perfect terrain for rather comfortable hikes. If you prefer higher altitudes, you can hike up to the Ice Holes, and afterwards you can hike the Eppan high mountain road, which stretches from north to south above the villages. From St. Michael you hike past Gandegg Castle and Stroblhof to the Eppan Ice Holes with a permanent airflow between the cracks and wide differences in temperature. These conditions are ideal for about 600 types of plants, and surprise visitors with an unusual interplay of nature. On the nearby high-alpine Eppan trail you can enjoy tours of any length up to 1400 metres of altitude.
Find pure relaxation in the Montiggl Forest: Two warm bathing lakes, deep-green mixed forests, and nature protected by biotopes are like balm for the soul for stressed people. You start in Girlan and continue along quiet side paths to Schreckbichl, past some traditional wine farms, and further to the south you enter the forest with beautiful quiet passages, until finally reaching an impressive viewpoint via Wilder-Mann-Bühel where you enjoy a fantastic view of the Überetsch region. In summer, the nearby Small and Big Montiggl Lakes, attract numerous bathing guests. You can extend this 4-hour hike with a swimming break at the lakes and make a wonderful day excursion out of it.
However, you can also choose from sporty and more demanding options. A classic with this regard is the crossing of Gantkofel Mountain. Starting point for the tour, which starts rather easy, is the Wieser Guesthouse in Perdonig. Soon, however the path gets steeper up to Gaider Scharte, until you finally reach the high-alpine area leading up to the summit at 1865 metres. The view from up there is extraordinary and reaches all the way from Überetsch to Bozen and to the Etschtal Valley. On the other side, the view reaches all the way to Brenta and to Ortler Mountain. It's worth filling the rucksack with some food and drinks and enjoying a beautiful and long break up there. Afterwards, the tour continues to the south through the big col, and then downhill and back to Perdonig.
Panoramic hikes, pleasure hikes, wine hikes and discovery tours to hidden natural treasures. Eppan has many hiking adventures to offer.
BIKE PARADISE FOR PLEASURE CYCLISTS TO FREERIDERS
Rarely travelled roads away from the main traffic routes, paths and trails in the forest, and comfortable cycling paths – the varied landscape of Eppan is ideal for discovery on a bike. If you still need some fine-tuning on your mountain-biking technique or need some tips from experienced local bike guides, you can participate at cycling technique training or guided bike tours in Eppan.
For pleasure cyclists
Be it mountain-bike, cross-bike or e-bike, Eppan offers a dense route network along picturesque vineyards through shady forests, past noble manors, imposing castles, stylish wineries or small, idyllic villages. Here you can combine small inclinations with great value.
On the cycling trail you can easily reach Kaltern and Bozen, and continue on the Etschtal cycling trail, which follows the Via Claudia Augusta route in a southerly direction all the way to Trento. How descriptive history can be, is shown in the Castle and Vineyard Tour in the area of St. Michael and St. Pauls, past Gandegg Castle, Englar Castle and Moos-Schulthaus Castle. Along the way you can stop at some of the comfortable guesthouses. Good wines and romantic bathing lakes accompany you on the Schreckbichl round tour, which starts near Girlan, crosses the vineyards and has the Montiggl Lakes as a tempting interim stop.
For mountain-bikers and freeriders
Eppan is located in the heart of South Tyrol and is the ideal starting point for a mountain-bike and freeride vacation. Discover the entire region on a bike on the labyrinth trails at medium altitude, or take the cable cars to the start of endless trail tours or to the UNESCO World Natural Heritage site of the Dolomites. Montiggl Forest attracts trail-loving mountain-bikers with flowing trails, the Mendelkamm mountain ridge above Eppan with Gantkofel Mountain and Monte Roen are rewarding panoramic summit experiences, and the "Zwei-Gondeltour" with some technical, some flowing downhill routes set freeriders' hearts beating. Amongst the most popular tours for mountain-bikers is the technically demanding "Grenzkammtour" with about 5000 m of difference in altitude along the edges of the Mendelkamm mountain ridge, the border between Trentino and South Tyrol, which awaits cyclists with varied passages, secluded single trails, and three summit experiences.
For road cyclists
Thanks to the mild temperatures from March onwards, and altitudes of between 250 and 450 metres, Eppan is the ideal destination for the spring training of road cyclists. Numerous tour proposals for fit athletes with many metres of difference in altitude, and routes for pleasure cyclists in the valley along Etsch River attract guests to Eppan. The Mendel and Gampenpass round tour with 1325 and 1620 m high mountain passes is twice the fun. When cycling through the Fleimstal and Eggental valleys you can also easily reach the Dolomite passes.
There are of course also various events focusing on the bike theme, like for example the traffic-free day on Mendel Pass on the 19th of September. The eppanBike | Days from 18th to 26th of April opens the start of the season with guided fun tours for pleasure cyclists or mountain-bikers, professional cycling technique training sessions and a special bike day with bike professionals and eppanBIKE testimonial Eva Lechner. The highlight of the eppanBIKE|Bike Week is the eppanBike | Expo on the 25th and 26th of April, where the newest bike trends from world-renowned brands like Pinarello, Cube and Scott can be discovered and tested.
