Spatium Pinot Blanc

The Pinot Bianco is gradually taking a leading place among South Tyrol’s white wines. Until a few years ago, this likeable local hero was still considered to be the poor cousin of South Tyrol’s wine industry. Now it has established itself a place as one of foremost.

Eppan/Appiano, South Tyrol’s largest wine-growing area, and the Pinot Bianco community together with the research centre at Laimburg are holding an event devoted solely to this grape variety, rich in tradition. It is the first Spatium Pinot Blanc in Eppan/Appiano in 2014.

Friday 29 August is devoted completely to trade experts. On Saturday 30 August all interested parties are invited. There will be an international Pinot Bianco tasting as well as high-quality food on offer.

Cellar masters, winegrowers and the heads of wine co-operatives are all agreed: Eppan is the perfect location for the Weissburgunder grape. With its microclimate, gravelly soils and ideal locations, everything comes beautifully together to produce quality grape juice from this variety, known since the 14th century. Popular legend has it that no less than Archduke John of Austria cultivated the first Weissburgunder vines in South Tyrol, back in 1852. Some 475 hectares of South Tyrol’s vineyards are dedicated to Weissburgunder, or somewhat more than 9% of the total cultivated area: the main growing areas for this widespread variety are to be found in particular in Germany’s Rhine-Hesse, Baden and Palatinate regions, as well as in Alsace and Burgundy in France.
