Gand | Eppan

The Gand connects the fraction Oberplanitzing | Kaltern with Eppan and is characterised by its very special nature. The houses are built on a pile of rubble and boulders are scattered all over the area.

According to legend, there was once a large town here, of whose existence the George Tower still bears witness today. The inhabitants are said to have become overconfident and thoughtless as a result of their wealth. As a punishment from heaven for this, one day a mighty thunderstorm arose which tore the mountain loose and brought it crashing down on the town in all its grandeur.

Above the Gand, at the foot of the Mendelkamm, at 935 metres above sea level, is the wooded Gandberg, which is very popular with hikers and mountain bikers. Here you can also find the well-known ice holes, which were formed a long time ago. The many different layers of stone made of quartz porphyry have created a cave system that allows the air flowing in from above to cool down considerably inside the loose scree. The cool air coming out of the rock at the bottom provides high alpine vegetation and a welcome cooling for hikers in summer.
