Winter in Eppan
When the Wine Region Turns White
A Rare Guest: Snow in the Valley
While the peaks of the Mendola Ridge are often capped with snow, the valley floor usually only sees a light dusting of frost. This year, however, was different. The snowfall wrapped the historic manors and endless rows of vines in a thick, white blanket. The result? A silence you can almost hear.
As seen in the stunning photograph by Marion Lafogler, the villages of St. Michael, St. Pauls, and Girlan look as if they’ve stepped out of time. The view down into the Etsch Valley, where the mist dances gently between the hills, feels almost like a classic oil painting.
Why We Love Winter in Eppan:
Winter Hiking through the Vines: There is nothing more relaxing than a walk through the snowy vineyards. The air is crystal clear, and the snow crunches satisfyingly under your boots with every step.
Embracing the Quiet: When nature hits the pause button, it’s time for us to slow down too. In the cozy "Stuben" of our local inns, a glass of South Tyrolean red wine by the fireplace tastes twice as good.
A Photographer’s Paradise: For professionals and hobbyists alike, the snow-covered castle ruins and historic estates offer rare and breathtaking motifs.
Looking Ahead to Spring
While we are soaking up every bit of this snowy spectacle, we know that beneath the white blanket, the vines are already preparing for the next vintage. The moisture is a blessing for the soil and promises a strong start for the coming season.
