Mindful... with light and noise
For a natural balance of tranquility and atmosphere
Eppan is a place where tranquility, nature, and quality of life play a special role. To keep it that way, it is important to be mindful with light and noise—for wildlife, for the community, and for ourselves. Too much artificial light or loud noise not only affects the environment, but also our own well-being.
Why this is important
Artificial light can disturb nocturnal animals, dim the starry sky, and consume unnecessary energy. Noise—such as music, traffic, or loud conversations—often has a longer-lasting effect than one might think and reduces relaxation.
Mindfulness means consciously allowing moments of silence and darkness as part of a natural and soothing environment.
How to be mindful with light and noise
Use light consciously
- Switch off lights when you don't need them – especially outdoors or on balconies.
- Use soft, warm white light that only shines where it is really needed.
- Close curtains or window blinds in the evening so that no bright light escapes outside and nocturnal animals are not disturbed.
- Enjoy the natural twilight in the evening hours – and allow nature to enjoy its rest period too.
- When you are out and about: Avoid shining flashlights or cell phone lights on animals or landscapes.
Appreciate the peace and quiet
- Keep the volume down when playing music, talking, or celebrating outdoors—especially late in the evening.
- Don't leave engines running unnecessarily and drive calmly and with foresight—this protects the environment and reduces noise.
- When hiking or cycling: enjoy the silence of nature – loud voices or music disturb animals and other recreation seekers.
- Observe the nighttime quiet hours in your accommodation or in the villages – this will help you contribute to a respectful coexistence.
- Experience how beneficial it can be to simply hear nothing – except the sounds of nature.
Good to know
In South Tyrol, certain legal requirements apply to protect against light and noise pollution. Outdoor lighting should be dimmed or switched off in the evening, and particularly bright, upward-facing lights are prohibited. Noise limits also apply—for example, from music or machinery—to ensure a peaceful night's sleep.
