The old meets the spirit of experimentation

Bergmannhof Winery

"You can't get more family-run than this," says Benjamin Pichler, looking at the Bergmannhof winery in Unterrain | Eppan. While he is responsible for administration and sales, his father Josef is in charge of the vineyard and cellar, and his brother Johannes sets the tone as cellar master. Here, the tried and tested meets the joy of experimentation, and the assortment of tried and tested wines and new, spontaneously fermented creations is created in an interplay. Here, 100 per cent long-matured Vernatsch becomes "Hoamet" and a cuvée of Chardonnay, Sauvignon blanc and Manzoni bianco from the Tonamphore unfiltered becomes "Eart" - an experiment that has caught on. A path that still lies ahead for the newcomer Pinot blanc with debut in 2023.

"The focus, however, is on autochthonous varieties with Lagrein as the flagship," Pichler emphasises. These thrive in the historically valuable Huberfeld, the "heart" of the total 4.5 hectares of vineyards - completed by sites in Missian and, more recently, Gaid. "With the young plants, we are aiming for an annual production of 25,000 bottles," says Pichler. A characteristic feature of the business is the farm-gate sales, which still account for 70 per cent today - mainly through regular customers from Germany. "Most of it still takes place in the historic cellar," says Pichler. Today, however, a different wind is blowing at the closed farm in the direction of organic and climate-neutral. And with Eppan wine increasingly local.

The Eppan Wine umbrella brand unites wine producers, sparkling wine producers and distilleries. It is the interface for wine lovers and producers, guests and partners, the tourist association and the municipality.
